On Sunday, November 22, the Amsterdam Synagogue Choir (ASK) will perform at the Groningen Synagogue. For over forty years, the ASK has been a defining force in the Jewish musical culture of the Netherlands. The choir's repertoire is primarily based on Western European Chazzanut (cantorial music), a musical tradition that enriches Jewish liturgy through artful singing and choral music. This tradition remains the core of the choir's performances.
Groningen chazzanut
To mark the 120th anniversary of the Groningen Synagogue (1906), the ASK will perform, among other works, pieces by the Groningen cantor Juda Izak Vleeschhouwer (1839-1913). Vleeschhouwer was associated with the Groningen Synagogue at the time of its dedication in 1906. Vleeschhouwer's musical legacy is preserved in the Kol Jehoeda (1928) by Benjamin Stern, who was also associated with the Groningen Synagogue as a chazzan.
Ilia Belianko
The ASK is led by conductor Ilia Belianko. Ilia Belianko is an experienced conductor, pianist, and composer. He studied piano, choral and orchestral conducting in Russia, Israel, and the Netherlands. He conducts various choirs and orchestras, arranges works, and has received numerous scholarships and awards for his musical achievements.
