JEWISH GRONINGEN
AGENDA
Stories about Judaism and Jews in Groningen
Did you know that Jews have been living in Groningen for more than four centuries? The exhibition introduces you to the history of the Jewish community in Groningen up to the present day. About entrepreneurs and teachers, about poor relief and superstars. You will also learn about the Jewish religion and the meaning of the holidays. And all that in the colorful shul of Groningen!
May 2 | 20.00 | Presentation | I Am The Other
If you are me and I am you, who is it… of both of us?
Bert Kremer, Reina Zijlstra and Willem Jan van der Stuut play the performance 'I Am The Other'. A performance with music, poetry and recitation. Over the past two years they have performed this performance in a number of churches in the province. Tonight they are in the synagogue. The basis of the program 'I Am The Other' are self-written and retranslated songs relating to war, peace, injustice, (self) reflection and hope.
May 3 | 10.30am-4pm | Open Jewish Houses / Houses of Resistance
In the Open Jewish Homes/Houses of Resistance program, small-scale, private memorial gatherings are organized in homes, in which memories of events and people are retrieved at the place where history took place. Jewish life before, during and immediately after the war in these houses is central.

Meetings will be organized in the province of Groningen on April 28, May 1, 3 and 4. In the city of Groningen on Friday, May 3, the afternoon ends at 4:00 PM in Synagogue Groningen.
May 8 | 8:00 PM | concert | Forbidden Voices
Not everyone has a voice. Those who do have a voice are not always allowed to make it heard. The 4 May Project sings to make the voices of others heard. In our new musical program 'Forbidden Voices', choir members make their voices heard to:
- to pass on music that was or is prohibited,
- to give voice to nuances that are lost,
- voices obliged to remain silent,
- to amplify languages that should not be heard.
Among others, Beautiful Rain, a song by the American composer David Asher Brown, based on the words of refugees from Darfur, will be performed. A cry for help that is hardly heard and sounds in many places.
May 9 | 6.30 & 9.00 PM | performance | In the illusion
Three musicians, two actresses and a magician play the story about two Jewish magicians and their wives. One magician is the well-known Prof. Ben-Ali-Libi, the other magician is Prof. Philippini. Both were born in the province of Groningen. We get to know their wives, Anna and Ida. They tell the story about the magicians, but also their own role in the lives of these men. A magician shows their numbers and three musicians use a clarinet, a violin, an accordion and singing to express the atmosphere of the pre-war years in which their lives in the Jewish revue and cabaret world took place.
May 12 | 3:00 PM | concert | Mixed Women's Choir: Music Confiture
The Mixed Ladies Choir, a group of special women,
this afternoon, under the enthusiastic leadership of Aletta Kwant, will perform 'Music Confiture' in Synagogue Groningen. With contributions from Margreet Puite (piano) and Evelien Borgonjon (score poetry).
