Wout van Bekkum about the families Sachs and Frank in East Groningen



Every year around May 4, commemorations are organized throughout the Netherlands during Open Joodse Huizen | Huizen van Verzet (Open Jewish Homes|Houses of Resistance). Storytellers, visitors and residents share stories in homes where people lived and worked during and just after World War II. Also this year, Open Jewish Homes | Houses of Resistance took place online. Live streams were broadcast at 13 addresses on May 3 and 4, 2021.

The province of Groningen is the subject in a contribution by Wout van Bekkum. He tells about the Sachs and Frank families who were part of life in the East Groningen villages of Bourtange and Vlagtwedde for two hundred years. Siegfried Frank, born on October 22, 1896 in Bourtange, married Sophie Sachs. After she died at a young age in 1929, Siegfried married her sister Nellie Sachs, with whom he had four children. Siegfried Frank was killed with his wife and children in February 1943.


Open Jewish Homes-Houses of Resistance is a project of the Jewish Cultural Quarter Amsterdam, based on an idea by Denise Citroen. OJH-HvV is organized in Groningen by the Folkingestraat Synagogue Foundation and the War and Resistance Center Groningen, with support from the Municipality of Groningen, the Province of Groningen and the J.B. Scholten Fund.
